If a family has decided that the applicant would not be a good match for their family, they will not call again. When a family declines an application, or if, in the highly unusual circumstance, the Aupair declines a family, the Aupair application will usually go back into circulation for possible placement with another family.

The second telephone interview may evolve around more specific information the family wishes to know about the applicant. The applicant should always avoid giving yes or no answers which discourage conversation. Some questions that might be asked during this call include:

·        Is the applicant's family supportive of him/her becoming an Aupair?

·        Is she/he in a relationship? And if so how does the mate feel about him/her going abroad for a year?

·        Do any family members plan to visit him/her while he/she is in the U.S.?

·        Does he/she have any travel plans?

·        How does he/she feel about disciplining children?

·        Why does he/she want to spend a year caring for children?

·        What is his/her favourite thing to do with children who are the Host Family's children's?

·        Does he/she have friends living in the U.S.?

These are only a few of the questions Host Families may ask. The more information both the Aupair and the Host Family share with one another the more likely the placement will prove to be a success. Some questions the Aupair might ask a potential Host Family are included in the Aupair Handbook given to each applicant following his/her interview with the Co-operator.

Confirming the Placement

Once the Aupair and the Host Family agree that they wish to spend a year together, the Host Family will confirm the placement with their Local Co-operator and the Aupair should inform his/her Co-operator as quickly as possible. If an applicant declines a family, he/she must give very specific reasons to the Co-operator before other possible Host Families are given an opportunity to contact the applicant.

Both the Local Coordinator and the International Co-operator must telephone, e-mail or fax a confirmation of the placement to the New York Aupair USA placement staff as soon as possible. The New York based placement staff will send a letter confirming the placement by fax and begin preparing visa and travel information for the Aupair's agreed upon departure date

A package will be sent to the Co-operator for the Au Pair, which will include flight reservations, general information about the orientation, and a map of Manhattan. It will also include important information for obtaining a J-1 visa. Refer to section VIII B below for detailed information on this process. The Aupair should be in the process of having a
